Unitika Trading Launches New Spun Yarn Made with Sorona® Polymer

September 24 2020
Unitika™ Palpa® is a multi-layer yarn that uses polyester for the core and cotton of the sheath.

Unitika Trading has succeeded in developing a new spun yarn Palpa® made with Sorona® polymer using a special multi-layer yarn technology (“PALPA® manufacturing method”) uniquely owned by Unitika Trading.

Unitika™ Palpa® is a multi-layer yarn that uses polyester for the core and cotton for the sheath. It has the softness of cotton and the high-strength properties of a polyester blend. It is more resistant to wrinkling than cotton and has excellent wash fastness. It is also superior in water absorption, quick drying and static electricity control compared to polyester.

Palpa® made with Sorona® polymer is a new material developed by both companies to complement each other's technology and advance the goal of creating a more, an environmentally friendly material. Additionally, it reduces our impact on the global environment and enhances people's lives as a functional material with improved easy-care properties, quick-drying water absorption, and pilling performance.

It is said that 10% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions are due to the fashion industry and second only to the oil industry. Unitika Trading has been incorporating SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) from an early stage and has come up with concrete measures for the themes of energy, water, and harmful chemical substances as the issues for textile manufacturers.

DuPont™ Sorona® polymer is a breakthrough bio-based, high performance polymer offering unique benefits for the apparel industry. Sorona® contains 37% annually renewable plant-based ingredients by weight and minimizes the impact on the environment without sacrificing quality and performance. From flexible yoga wear to denim to everything in-between, Sorona® can make any textile look good, feel good and do good. It offers unique performance benefits, including incredible softness, stretch and recovery, and inherent stain resistance without the need for topical treatments.

“We believe that transparency and traceability are integral steps on our path to making an impact on the textile industry. Certified by our Common Thread Certification Program, Unitika™ Palpa® is an excellent example of this,” said Alexa Raab.
